Why we failed as a species.

Let’s wind the clock back a few thousand years. Maybe the time when the earth was a giant red ball of fire. Gradually, it started cooling down and after sometime meteors served as a catalyst in the formation of life on earth. Trees originated and there was water all around the world. It was this perfect time when life on earth came into being. The first animal was ‘probably’ a species of fish. Then one day one of the fish tried to show courage and left the water and started crawling on land. And that’s how land animals originated. At least this is what I know from what I have read. Evolution also played a very key role in shaping the species for their survival. And now here we are. Humans. The dominating species on the earth who have nearly fucked up this whole planet.

One hundred and fifty years ago, the monster began, this country had become a place of industry. Factories grew on the landscape like weeds. Trees fell, fields were up-ended, rivers blackened. The sky choked on smoke and ash, and the people did, too, spending their days coughing and itching, their eyes turned forever toward the ground. Villages grew into town, towns into cities. And people began to live on the earth rather than within it.” – Patrick Ness

We may call ourselves an intelligent species, but the truth is that we failed very terribly as a species. We have managed to make industries and all kinds of technology that gives comfort to us, but at the same time we have done things which are not moral in any sense. We have polluted mother nature. We destroyed the Earth. We chopped down trees, but never cared to plant them. That’s why Ian Rankin said ““You wouldn’t think you could kill an ocean, would you? But we’ll do it one day. That’s how negligent, we are.”

The picture besides shows the Infographics of World’s deadliest animals and the number of HUMANS killed by the animal per year. The most ironic thing about it is that the second deadliest animal who killed the most number of humans is HUMAN itself. We kill our own species. And it’s not for eating purpose as you might find in some other animals. We kill because we like it. We are always in search of war. We find it difficult to maintain peace. We like killing other animals just for fun. And to make it worse, we also organize competitions where hunters are allowed to kill as many animals they can just for some trophy.“If peace can only come through killing someone, then I don’t want it.”
― Hiro Mashima

We give more importance to wars and less to science. In place of teaching kids how to solve problems on their own we teach them that praying can solve all their problems. We don’t mind if someone is cutting down a tree but will kill anyone who says a word against our religion. We don’t want to be smart but we want smart phones by our side. It’s true that we are still very much apes with smartphones in our hand.

We are destroying our planet at an alarming rate. But we don’t know about it. We will realize it when the last tree will fell down, when the last fish will be eaten and when the last river will be poisoned. It will be this time when we will know that we cannot eat money.

Do you know why we fear that alien contact will not be peaceful? It’s because we have derived this fear that aliens will treat us just the way we treat each other.11913237_876318685787875_687758393327178261_n

Many people think that it won’t harm them if the earth is going to be destroyed because they will be probably dead by the time. But what they don’t know is that we cannot destroy the earth. We are not that powerful. We are indirectly hurting ourselves. The earth will heal herself every time. It is us who will fear the apocalypse. We also forget that even if we will not be here our children will be here and they will be the one to suffer because of us.

In the recent studies it was found that the Earth has already entered the sixth mass extinction phase and it’s just a matter of time before humans will extinct from the earth. I personally think that is necessary because we have already done a lot for mother earth. It’s time we bid farewell and let earth start a new journey, maybe a better one this time.

  1. I love the point you made about us being apes with smart phones in our hands….. very, very true. People have completely forgotten how to communicate with each other. We tune each other out and distract ourselves from the obvious destruction going on around us, every day. And the point about us fearing aliens? Bang on. Great post.
